Does Sleep Focus block apps? Sleep Focus vs Downtime vs App Limits
iPhone has several sleep and screen time settings with similar names. Here is what each one really does at bedtime, and how to combine them.
Short answer
No. Sleep Focus does not block or lock any app. It silences notifications and calls, can dim your Lock Screen and can hide Home Screen pages, but you can still open every app. To block apps at night, use Screen Time: Screen Time Schedule in iOS 27, or Downtime in iOS 26. The best setup uses both: Sleep Focus for quiet, Screen Time for limits.
Many people turn on Sleep Focus and expect it to stop them from scrolling. It does not. The notifications go quiet, but Instagram and YouTube open as normal. If you had the same surprise, you are not alone. The names are confusing, so here is what each setting really does.
I tried Screen Time and Downtime before I built Valo Sleep, so I know how confusing these names can be.
What Sleep Focus actually does
Sleep Focus is one of iPhone's Focus modes. It is made to keep your phone quiet while you sleep. It can:
- Silence notifications and calls, except from people and apps you allow.
- Dim your Lock Screen so the phone is less bright at night.
- Show only some Home Screen pages, so you see fewer apps.
- Turn on by itself with your sleep schedule from the Health app.
It cannot lock an app. Hidden Home Screen pages only hide the icons. The apps still open from search or the App Library. Focus filters change what some apps show, like which email account, but they do not block anything either.
What is Wind Down?
Wind Down is part of your sleep schedule in the Health app. It starts 15 minutes to 3 hours before your bedtime, and Sleep Focus begins at the start of Wind Down. It is a good signal that bedtime is near, but like Sleep Focus, it does not lock apps.
To set it up in iOS 27, open Health › Browse › Sleep and edit your schedule. In iOS 26, open the Health app, search for Sleep, and go to your sleep schedule.
Sleep Focus vs Downtime vs App Limits
In iOS 27, Apple renamed two of these. Downtime became part of Screen Time Schedule, and App Limits became Time Allowances.
| Setting | What it does | Blocks apps? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep Focus | Silences notifications and calls, dims the Lock Screen | No | A quiet phone while you sleep |
| Downtime (iOS 26) / Screen Time Schedule (iOS 27) | Chooses the hours when apps are available | Yes, strict only with a Screen Time passcode | Locking apps at night |
| App Limits (iOS 26) / Time Allowances (iOS 27) | Limits how much time you spend in apps each day | Yes, when the time runs out, strict only with a passcode | Using apps less during the day |
Two things to know:
- App Limits are daily totals in iOS 26. They do not depend on the time of day. If you have 30 minutes left at 11:00 PM, you can use them in bed. For nights, Downtime is the right tool. In iOS 27, Time Allowances can follow your Screen Time Schedule.
- Downtime does not follow your sleep schedule. In iOS 26, there is no switch to connect Screen Time with the Health app's sleep schedule, and Apple's iOS 27 guide does not mention one either. You need to set the same times yourself, and change both if your bedtime changes.
Is Sleep Focus the same as Do Not Disturb?
They are similar. Both silence notifications. Sleep Focus is made for the night: it can turn on with your sleep schedule and Wind Down, and it can dim your Lock Screen. Do Not Disturb is a general Focus you can use at any time. Neither one blocks apps.
The best bedtime setup on iPhone
- Set a sleep schedule in the Health app, with your wake-up time and bedtime.
- Turn on Wind Down, for example 1 hour before bed, so Sleep Focus starts on time.
- Lock apps with Screen Time at the same time. Use Screen Time Schedule in iOS 27 or Downtime in iOS 26. My guide on how to lock apps at night on iPhone has the steps.
- Add a Screen Time passcode if you often skip limits. See how to stop tapping Ignore Limit.
- If you sleep with sound, use iPhone's Background Sounds: Settings › Accessibility › Audio & Visual › Background Sounds. You can set a timer, and you can turn off Stop Sounds When Locked so the sound keeps playing with the screen locked. Keep the volume low.
Questions people ask
Does Sleep Focus block apps?
No. Sleep Focus silences notifications and calls and can hide Home Screen pages, but every app still opens. To block apps at night, use Screen Time Schedule (iOS 27) or Downtime (iOS 26).
Can I make Sleep Focus block apps?
Not with Focus settings. Focus filters only change what some apps show. A Shortcuts automation can lock your screen when you open an app, but it is easy to turn off and does not really block the app. To block apps, use Screen Time, or an app built on Screen Time.
Does Downtime follow my sleep schedule?
No. Screen Time and the Health app's sleep schedule are separate. Set the same times in both, and remember to change both when your bedtime changes.
Will Sleep Focus stop my alarm?
No. Sleep Focus silences notifications, not your alarms. Your wake-up alarm still rings.
